Top Tips: Caring for your Canvas Camping Tent
To get the best value from your canvas tent it is important that you care for it correctly. To begin with, you need to season your canvas when it’s new and also after long periods when it has been stored. Pitch your tent and hose it down with water. The water shrinks the canvas around the thread of the stitch lines and allows the cotton in the canvas to swell. You need to repeat this process a couple of times.
If you have missed a small spot or a seam, you can temporarily fix this by applying wax from a clear wax candle. Rub the candle on the exterior of the stitch line and/or the spot. The wax acts as a waterproof barrier quickly sealing that spot or seam. No need to get wet, but you do have to remember to take a candle with you. Keep it in your kit bag.
A reason why people purchase canvas tents over their polyester cousins is durability, warmth, weight and strength. Caring for the canvas in your tent will prolong its lifetime.
